Experience the living water mill
On mill days, the volunteer mill guild starts the watermill. You can talk to the volunteer mill guild about their work and maintenance of the historic watermill. The volunteer mill guild runs the watermill for about half an hour at a time. Access to the watermill is included in the ticket to Esrum Kloster & Møllegård.
Meet the mill guild
In the spring of 2023, the mill wheel and the entire machinery that drives the mill grinder were restored. This means that after a break of many years, the mill is now working again. A volunteer mill guild is responsible for maintaining the historic water mill, and on mill days, the mill guild starts up the water mill and explains how it works.
The history of water
In the area around Esrum Monastery, the water meanders in various streams. Esrum Lake, the most water-rich lake in Denmark, is located just two kilometers south of the monastery. From here runs Esrum Å, which carries large amounts of water into the landscape around Esrum Kloster & Møllegård, where there are streams, small ponds, ponds and wet meadows. Access to the large water resources was one of the reasons why the monks and later also the kings chose to settle in Esrum and used water mills.
