Our WORLD IMAGES course gives students an insight into medieval conceptions of the world. Through stories and tasks, students learn about how man’s relationship with the world and its creatures has changed over time.
Worldviews
4th-6th grade & 7th-9th grade
How do we humans view the world we are a part of?
Are we just tiny pieces in an infinite universe - or are we the center of it all?
The world in the Middle Ages
In the Middle Ages, large parts of the world were unexplored and imagination was often given free rein when describing unknown regions and countries.
The first monks who came to Esrum in 1151 had traveled all the way from France. Not all of them were French, some were English, others German. But what they had in common was that although they had already traveled a lot around Europe, Denmark was still unknown to them.
A journey back in time
The students are going on a journey back to the 13th century. The monk Stefan has left a time capsule for us. Here he gives us a glimpse into his worldview and sets some tasks along the way.
Dressed in monk robes, we go to the monastery for prayer. We learn about the life and everyday life of the monks. And through stories and tasks, we will learn more about the medieval world map Mappa Mundi and the medieval natural history handbook Bestiarium.
