A rich history of horse breeding and hunting
The forests around Esrum Abbey have a long and rich history of royal horse breeding and hunting.
In the 16th century, Frederik II established Denmark’s first royal stud farm at the monastery, and the Frederiksborg Horse was recognized as one of Europe’s finest horse breeds.
Hunting draws connections to the par force hunts that were particularly popular among the kings in the 16th-17th centuries, which took place in Gribskov, among other places.
