Can we use the monks' knowledge of medicinal herbs in our modern society today?
Snake root, lungwort and ox tongue: The monastery garden is full of strange plants. Some are poisonous if consumed in large doses, but they can also have a healing effect if you know how to use them – and the monks at Esrum Monastery did just that.
Learning objectives
THE IMPORTANCE OF FAITH: The student gains insight into how important faith was for people in medieval society.
THE MONK’SDAY: The student gains an understanding of how a monk’s everyday life was shaped – in a fixed repetitive structure between prayer and work.
THE MEDIEVAL VIEW OF DISEASE: The student gains insight into the medieval understanding of disease and healing and can draw comparisons to today’s understanding of disease.
MEDICAL HERBS: The student can recognize three new medicinal plants and make ointment from medicinal plants.
