Join us as we open the doors to a truly special concert experience in the Abbots’ Hall at Esrum Abbey. At the concert, Marika Thinggaard and Niels Ottosen, together with the vocal ensemble Motet Ramløse, will perform music by Hildegard von Bingen and vocal folk music from the Nordic countries.
Hildegard von Bingen was one of the most remarkable figures of the Middle Ages: an abbess, mystic, author, and composer. As a female composer of the Middle Ages, she holds a very special place in music history, and her works are still sung around the world.
The concert culminates with the world premiere of new compositions written specifically for Esrum Abbey. The works draw inspiration from the site’s history and were created specifically for the very spaces where the Cistercian monks once lived their lives in prayer, work, and silence. With the Abbot’s Hall serving as a special setting, the concert becomes an encounter between the past and the present—between Hildegard’s medieval melodies, Nordic singing traditions, and brand-new music created for Esrum Abbey.
About the Ramløse Motet Ensemble
The music is performed by the Ramløse Motet Ensemble, which alternates between vocal and instrumental music. The concert’s repertoire ranges from older Nordic folk songs and dance tunes to early classical music by the great medieval Christian mystic, composer, and abbess Hildegard von Bingen. Along the way, the surprising similarities between the two musical traditions come to light.
The concert will also feature a new composition by Niels Ørts Ottosen, written and dedicated specifically to Esrum Abbey.
The Ramløse Motet Ensemble consists of:
