Cultural heritage crafts get a new lease of life

Learn how to make beautiful baskets and fabrics from natural materials.

On the courses, you will learn about the cultural and historical crafts, learn concrete methods for collecting the materials in nature and get expert one-on-one guidance in the craft. We have plenty of time for learning, conversation and immersion in the craft.

As an outdoor guide and bushcrafter, Regine Thomsen has many years of experience working with crafts made from natural materials.

Hopefully, you’ll come home with a lot of inspiration to continue working on your own.

Course 22 June: Bark braiding

Weaving is one of the oldest cultural and historical crafts. People in all times and cultures have woven from the branches, plant fibers and bark that were available in the landscape they lived in. Many of the most important everyday objects have been woven – baskets, containers, fishing nets, knife handles and much more.

The course starts with a short walk around the landscape of the monastery and where we find materials suitable for wicker. We go through methods to harvest bark and prepare it for use.

And then it’s time to braid ….. You’ll get the bark in your hands and learn how to weave a willow bark container using the diagonal weave technique. The teacher will also inspire you to make simpler containers from bark and show you other braiding techniques such as plaiting, twining and twill.

Course June 29: Botanical prints

In the landscape around the monastery grows a wealth of herbs, flowers and trees that can create the most beautiful botanical prints on fabric.

The plants are like living archives that tell the story of the development of the landscape. Some plants are native to this particular landscape, others were introduced by monks in the Middle Ages and strayed out of the convent garden to grow in the surrounding landscape.

The course starts with a short walk in the monastery landscape and the monastery garden, where we tell the stories of the plants and collect the botanical prints.
Botanical printing, also called eco-printing, is a wonderful technique where different plant parts – leaves, flowers and bark leave shapes and colors on textiles.

And then it’s time to experiment with colors and shapes…. You will learn the techniques to prepare the textiles before printing, distribute the leaves and flowers and bundle them into rolls to be steamed in a pot. During this process, the plants will give off their natural colors to the fabric, creating a beautiful print.
