Every year, we have 60 artisans with booths at the Christmas market, spread out between Esrum Vandmølle and a large circus tent. Here you can see who you might meet during the two weekends 28. & November 29 and 5. & December 6
Food for the Many Christmas Celebrations
At the Christmas market, you can stock up your pantry and find hostess gifts that will make everyone’s eyes light up with Christmas cheer.
In the store and beneath the vaulted ceilings of the monastery cellar, you’ll find hand-selected delicacies from European monasteries and food producers who value quality and tradition.
Here you’ll find, among other things, French raw-milk cheeses, saucisson, rolled sausage, and medister from Lejre Mikropølser. This year, we’re highlighting Italian cuisine: nduja, pancetta, guanciale, gourmet tomatoes of all kinds, olives, and much, much more. But don’t worry: We still have authentic South Jutland honey cakes, Swedish pepparkakor, the nuns’ Reine Claude marmalade, and the Countess’s cherry wine.
At Esrum Abbey, the story of craftsmanship is part of the place’s history. At the Christmas market, this tradition lives on through the ingredients and food crafted with time, care, and respect for tradition. Sample the offerings and find something truly special for your Christmas meals and celebrations.
Hand-Selected Handicrafts
At the Christmas market at Esrum Kloster & Møllegård, handcrafted items take center stage. Here, you can explore goods created by the artisans you’ll meet at the booths in Esrum Vandmølle and in our large circus tent. You can see the craftsmanship up close, learn about the materials, and hear the stories behind the ideas and techniques.
All the artisans have been carefully selected based on a single principle: They design and craft the items they sell themselves. This gives the Christmas market a personal touch and offers the chance to speak with the person who has worked on the item from concept to finished product. You might notice a detail you would otherwise have overlooked, or learn why the artisan chose that particular shape or material.
At the stalls, you’ll find, among other things, handmade Christmas decorations, glassware, ceramics, textiles, jewelry, soaps, and baskets. Here you’ll find both items that can become part of your Christmas at home and thoughtfully chosen gifts. When you take something home, the story of the artisan and the work behind it goes home with you.

Christmas Fun for the Little Ones
Christmas is a time for children, and at the Christmas market at Esrum Kloster & Møllegård, we’ve organized plenty of fun and cozy activities that the whole family can enjoy
- Sing along as Santa Claus, the music elf, and Rudolf put on a Christmas concert. You’ll also have the chance to meet Santa Claus.
- Visit the Christmas workshop at Naturhelten. Here, you can make Christmas decorations using natural materials.
- Dip your own Advent candles and make a cool elf hat with embroidery at Makit
- Explore the Elf Trail, organized by the social enterprise Kilden. You’ll find it behind the watermill
- Let the kids pick out your Christmas tree, which you can buy from Esrum Haveservice at Møllegården
- Take this year’s Christmas photo at the various photo booths
- Visit the nature playground and burn off some energy

When is the Christmas market?
We’re holding a Christmas market over two weekends: 28. – November 29 and 5. – December 6. Every day from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
How much is the ticket?
Adults cost 75 kroner, and children under 18 get in for free
Why do I have to pay an admission fee to a Christmas market?
Admission revenue covers the costs of Christmas decorations, Christmas lights, activities, set design, operating expenses, and logistical arrangements.
The admission ticket also includes access to the exhibition at Esrum Kloster & Møllegård. The regular admission fee for the exhibition is 110 kr., and during the Christmas market, the exhibition is included in the Christmas market ticket.
Where can I buy a ticket?
Tickets can be purchased at the ticket booth when you arrive. There are ticket booths both at the entrance on Frederiksværksvej (where there is also a parking lot) and on Klostergade.
How many artisans are there at the Christmas market?
Every year, we have 60 artisans as vendors. You won’t see all of the vendors every weekend. Some artisans have a booth on both weekends, while others are there on just one of the weekends.

What payment options are available?
We accept cash, debit cards, and MobilePay. During peak periods, such as the Christmas market, you may experience signal issues with our Dankort terminals and Wi-Fi connection—and consequently with MobilePay. It’s therefore a good idea to bring cash just in case.
Can you take public transportation to the Christmas market?
Yes! And you won’t have to worry about finding a parking spot, which can be hard to come by since we’re expecting a lot of guests. You can take either the train or the bus from Copenhagen via Elsinore or Hillerød.
What are the parking conditions like?
We expect a very large crowd. Please be aware that there will be a lot of cars in the area around Frederiksværksvej.
We hope you’ll put on your “mental elf hat,” be very patient with one another, and give a smile to the friendly scouts on site who are keeping an eye on the parking lot. These young scouts are here to help show you where to park and explain the parking options when you arrive. Please follow their instructions, as the ground may be wet in several places, and we’d like to avoid cars getting stuck.
Parking is at your own risk.
In addition, we’ve put together an overview of parking options in the area, marked with Christmas hearts. Please note that you are not allowed to park on Klostergade.
OUR OWN FREE PARKING SPACE:
This is, of course, the closest parking lot to the Christmas market, but it fills up very quickly. You’ll also find marked accessible parking spaces here. Please follow the scouts’ instructions when you arrive—they’re there only to help ensure that everyone has a great experience.

– The parking lot at the intersection of Frederiksværksvej and Esrum Hovedgade

– Esrum Sports Complex
– Public, marked parking spaces on Esrum Hovedgade
We also encourage you to take public transportation here—there are buses that stop right outside the door
What are the accessibility conditions like?
Wheelchair users can access virtually the entire area; the monastery itself is difficult to access. If you have a companion pass, admission is free.
Can I get around with my stroller?
Yes, you can! But there isn’t room for strollers inside the buildings. You’ll also find a changing table in the accessible restroom in Klostergården.
Can I bring my dog?
Of course! But please note that, unfortunately, your four-legged friend is not allowed in our indoor areas and must be kept on a leash.
Can I make a reservation at Møllecaféen?
Unfortunately, it is not possible to reserve a table at Møllecaféen during our Christmas market weekends.
Can I visit Esrum Abbey, Esrum Watermill, and the nature playground at the Christmas market?
Yes, you certainly can! Admission to the exhibits is included with a ticket to the Christmas market, and the nature playground is open to children and the young at heart 24 hours a day.
I'm looking forward to it! Is there anything else I need to know?
We do that, too! But yes: Dress for the weather. Much of the Christmas market takes place outdoors in our beautiful natural surroundings.
