April 12th
Big Hiking Day
In connection with Great Hiking Day in North Zealand, you can join a guided walking-taste-experience tour where we follow the paths of water through Esrum Ådal. It is free to participate. The route is 4.5 kilometers.
Store Vandredag is organized by Foreningen Tisvildevejen and Gribskov Municipality.
A 4.5 kilometer water walk
Take a sensory and enriching 4.5 kilometer hike through the beautiful Esrum Ådal. For centuries, water has created life, stories and connections between people and nature. We follow the water’s path from the sacred spring through the lush, wet meadows where a rich animal and plant life thrives.
The tour continues along the shores of Esrum Lake, where the monks of the monastery built waterways for transportation and supply, and where the water is still a source of peace and reflection. Along the way, our walk host shares stories about the area’s 900-year history and the people who have shaped the landscape around Esrum Monastery – from medieval monks to royal millers.
Meet the mill guild and taste monastic beer
Our water walk ends at Esrum Watermill, where we enjoy a well-deserved, cool Esrum Klosterøl in the company of our volunteer mill guild. Here you can experience an impressive piece of living cultural history when the Mill Guild sets the old watermill in motion.
The water mill has been crucial to both the running of the monasteries and the development of the local community, and inside the mill you can get a special insight into how the power of water was harnessed to both grind grain and generate electricity.
‘Water’s ways through Esrum Ådal’ is a guided water hike that is part of the Great Hiking Day on April 12 in Gribskov municipality.
