Both in the Middle Ages and still today, abbeys were/are manufacturers. They utilise what surrounds them; the income helps to keep the abbeys running. Throughout Europe, there are monasteries and convents that still make soaps, creams and much more besides. In the shop, visitors encounter this tradition. Often the marmalades and jams, which the nuns stir themselves, are made using ancient recipes. In other words, they stem from our common history. It is all about hands.
