The film installation THE POWER OF WATER brings to life the eternal story of how water shapes our world. THE POWER OF WATER is a collaborative project between Esrum Kloster & Møllegård and Kongernes Nordsjælland National Park.
The journey of water
Experience a fascinating cinematic installation in Esrum Water Mill.
As soon as you enter the historic building, a world of water opens up and you are greeted by a guiding voice that will take you on a water journey in North Zealand.
You become part of an experience in sound, film and light: From the great waters of Esrum Lake, through the river and up through the mill. Here you can feel the huge gears that make Esrum Water Mill come alive.
The living mill
The monks were the first to utilize water as a resource in the area. They built a water mill that could work for them.
In the 1600s, when the monastery had been closed and the area had passed to the Crown, Chr. 4 redirected the river and moved the location of the mill to where it is today. This created a greater drop in the water and a much more efficient mill. Since then, the mill has been burned, rebuilt and remodeled a few times and has been used as a grain mill, sawmill and power station.
At our mill days, you can learn a lot about the watermill when our volunteer mill guild starts the mill and tells its history. The mill days are regularly announced here on the website.
The water in North Zealand
The water in the landscape around Esrum Kloster & Møllegård has had a major impact on the development of the area.
Esrum Lake, Denmark’s most water-rich lake, is located just 2 km south of the area. From here, Esrum Å flows into the landscape around Esrum Kloster & Møllegård, where there are streams, small ponds, ponds and wet meadows.
The Water Mill also inspires you to go out and experience the water in other parts of North Zealand.
