Esrum at children’s height
At Esrum Kloster & Møllegård, children get history in their hands
Esrum at childrens Height is coming May 2026
Esrum at Children’s Height serves the monastery’s stories to all generations. Here, the sky is high and there is room for the whole family to play, be curious together and get the story in their hands. Every weekend, all year round, there will be children’s activities where everyone can play along.
Kids’ activities every weekend – all year round
Every weekend, all year round, you can try children’s activities that bring history to life. Depending on the seasons, the children’s activities change so that the experiences always reflect the seasons. This means that you will always experience something new when you visit Esrum, whether you visit us when the sun shines or the snow lies like a thick duvet on Klosterengen.
All right here in Esrum – and of course at children’s height.

Borrow a Child Bag
In the exhibition Eye for Landscape, you can borrow the Children’s Bag to take out into the landscape. The Children’s Bag is tailor-made for a quiet family time where you can be creative, curious and experience the landscape with new eyes.
In the Children’s Bag you’ll find small activities: things to draw, things to make with your hands, things to collect and investigate – and small questions to get you thinking and talking. In the Children’s Bag you’ll also find a map with places where it’s especially good to sit down and ideas on how to take the experience home with you. The content of the Kids’ Bag changes with the seasons, so there’s always something new to explore and try out.
- The kids bag is made for families with children from 6 years old
- The children’s bag can be borrowed in the exhibition Eye for Landscape at Esrum Kloster with a valid ticket
- Kids bag activities can be done at your own pace
- The children’s bag must be returned to the exhibition afterwards
Children's activities in Eye for Landscape
In the monastery’s Eye for Landscape exhibition, there are children’s activities every weekend that go hand in hand with the Children’s Bag. The children’s activities can be found both inside and outside.
You can participate in the children’s activities regardless of whether you have borrowed a Children’s Bag or not – but the Children’s Bag gives you something extra to take out and something to return to the exhibition with.
The children’s activities follow the seasons. What sprouts outside appears inside the exhibition
Children's tour: The first day at the monastery
Step into the vaulted monastery cellar and hear about Brother Stefan. He has just arrived at Esrum Monastery – maybe a little excited, maybe a little nervous. Together we will follow him on his first day as a monk.
We sit close in the semi-darkness, the story takes shape and the senses come into play: Feel the soft beeswax in your hands and smell the herbs of the monastery garden.
After the story, we go up to the Abbey Hall where we sit quietly and listen to the monks singing.
- The children’s tour is for children from 6 years old
- The children’s tour begins at 10:30 on Saturday and Sunday
- The children’s tour lasts approximately 20 minutes
- The children’s tour takes place inside Esrum Monastery in the monastery cellar
- Children under 18 are free when accompanied by adults
Brother Stefan's treasure hunt
Take the story outside and explore the monastery. Continue the story of Brother Stefan – the one you met in the children’s tour in the monastery cellar.
With a map in hand, find different items. Look through a glass, find the answer and collect letters along the way. The tour goes through the monastery garden and Klostergården – where history unfolds in the open air.
Go on a treasure hunt when it suits you – with or without a guided tour for children. Get the treasure map inside the monastery and walk together in Brother Stefan’s footsteps.
- The tax card is handed out inside Esrum Kloster
- The treasure hunt takes place in the area
- The treasure hunt is included in the one-way ticket
- The treasure hunt goes at your own pace
Visit the nature playground
At the Nature Playground there is room to let your imagination run wild and burn off some steam.
The nature playground is inspired by a small medieval village where you can play knights of the fortress, take a trip across the moat or whizz along on the cable car.
When your legs get tired, you can take a break in the packed lunch house or enjoy some campfire fun if you bring some dough for snow bread. The nature playground is free to visit and open all year round – for both young and old adventurers
Try the VR glasses
Invite the whole family on a digital journey through time where history comes alive before your eyes with our VR glasses.
With VR glasses on, you’ll suddenly find yourself in the middle of the monastery courtyard – and the story will come alive and be fun for kids and adults alike.
The experience gives you a good sense of what it looked like inside Esrum Monastery
